#408: The Ethical Dilemma, 6/20/25
NYC Weekly Newsletter for Non-Exploitive Social Work Jobs and Resources
We have two new listings on Jobs for the People this week.
Just a note to the community: This week’s trends have not improved. I saw fewer listings or lower wages immediately after the election, and it eased up after the new year, but with general economic instability, we are seeing an apprehensive job market. Both graduate season and fall should be high yield for hiring, but after I posted my message from last week on IG, folks from other professions stated that they were experiencing the same impact.
Being in the position of finding the right job for someone used to be so much fun for me. I loved finding the right fit for a social worker’s needs and goals- like a matchmaker. However, this year things have really shifted. I’ve been nervous about what I’m seeing and how things are moving, or…not moving at all. More people are graduating into a market than can accommodate their employment. The post-pandemic therapy boom is over, and it appears as though agencies are not very quick to replace an outgoing direct services worker and are consolidating services at the bottom due to concern about whether their funding will continue. And they’re right to be concerned! This administration is erratic as hell and hates New York.
In a surprise to no one, there are tons of jobs available in correctional health services.
Therefore, like I said last week, if direct services is your goal, I recommend you find a job that meets your basic needs and hunker down for the time being. I will keep you updated as I see shifts and changes.
Solidarity.
